About Us

Led by Cheesemonger, Matt Steele (Associate of the World Academy of Cheese), Cornelius Cheesemongers is a premier cheese experience. Founded in 2008, Cornelius Cheesemongers has its roots in hospitality, customer service and a deep understanding of cheese.

We are passionate about selling cheese in its best condition, and age cheese in our Cheese Cave cool room in Brunswick, Victoria, which is also the location of our cheese shop. We also offer catering, including Cheese Celebration Towers, bespoke grazing tables, which are our signature product and feature our Cheesemonger Matt’s professional skill in cutting and presenting cheeses.

We are also famous for our Cheese Club, a food experience that delights our clubbers every month.

We love talking cheese, and look forward to your enquiry.

About Matt

It was while backpacking through Europe in his early 20s, where, sitting curbside in Bordeaux, Matt combined a crispy baguette, slice of fresh green apple and a wedge of Roquefort. It was love at first bite, and his cheese obsession began.

After a couple of years hanging around cheese people, he was offered the chance to take over his local cheese shop. Being born and bred in the hospitality industry, growing up in pubs and surrounded by family and friends passionate about food and entertaining, he jumped on the opportunity to combine his vast experience in the industry, and his passion for cheese.

In 2008, Matt opened Cornelus Cheesemongers on Maling Road in Canterbury, Victoria, one of the first cheese shops in Melbourne that offered the whole package; cheese, coffee, wine and a menu of the best seasonal Australian produce, with a French and Italian twist.

In 2013, Matt developed the Cornelius Cheesemongers online retail store (Australia’s first and only 100% online Cheese Store, and, then, national Cheese Club), and has continued to be at the forefront of the industry. The business has now grown to importing farmhouse and artisan cheeses from all over the world, and selling both wholesale and retail from our cheese cave in Brunswick.

Matt is passionate about sharing his knowledge and passion, and has presented in England, Singapore and the USA, while also consulting extensively in Australia, from assisting cheese makers to develop their product, to undertaking cheese master classes and assisting in setting up cheese retail stores; most recently Plonk and Stink, in Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula.

Through constantly learning, tasting, speaking to other cheesemongers, makers and suppliers from Australia and around the world, Matt has forged a unique perspective on cheese, and idolises the art and science of cheesemaking - from the paddock to the complex maturation process.

He LOVES talking cheese, and looks forward to chatting with you in the Cheese Shop!
